Read This Before Starting Your Install:

This guide walks you through installing a front moto brake kit on a Surron Light Bee. The kit swaps your stock front brake setup for a 240mm moto rotor with a matched caliper, master cylinder, and fork-mount bracket. The result is stronger, more consistent front-end stopping power, which is what you want once you start riding harder or adding more speed to the bike.

This is for the home mechanic who's comfortable pulling a front wheel, torquing bolts to spec, and doing basic cable routing. If you've done a rotor swap before, this job is in your wheelhouse. The install process is nearly identical on Talaria and a few other similar small bikes, so the same steps apply if you're working on one of those.

What you get in the box: the front brake assembly (caliper, line, master cylinder), a fork bracket, two spacers (one longer, one shorter), two mounting bolts, and the 240mm moto brake rotor. You'll reuse three pieces of hardware off your OEM caliper bracket. Plan on blue Loctite for every bolt that holds the rotor and bracket on, and torque everything to the spec listed in your bike's manual. Skipping Loctite or skipping torque is how you lose a front end on a ride.

Install Steps:

    Remove the front wheel and stock caliper

    Get the bike up, pull the front axle, and drop the wheel out. Unbolt the stock front caliper from the fork so it's out of the way. Set the wheel aside on a clean surface so you can work on the rotor.

    Remove the stock master cylinder and unplug the brake sensor

    Up at the handlebars, pull the stock master cylinder off. Before you yank anything, find the brake sensor on the back of the master cylinder, follow the wire down, and unplug it at the connector. You could snip and heat shrink it instead, but unplugging takes two minutes and keeps things clean.

    Mount the new master cylinder to the bar

    Bolt the new master cylinder onto the handlebar. Snug it down for now. You can fine-tune the lever angle later once you've ridden the bike and know where you want it.

    Remove the old rotor and spacers from the wheel

    Unbolt the old 220 rotor (or whatever you're running) from the hub. You will not need the rotor-side spacer anymore, so set it aside along with the spacer on the opposite side. The new kit uses its own spacers.

    Install the 240mm moto rotor

    Orientation matters. The laser-engraved lettering on the rotor faces up, toward you, when the rotor is bolted on. Put a drop of blue Loctite (or equivalent) on each rotor bolt. Snug them down, then torque to your bike's factory spec (check your manual, roughly 8 Nm in this install). Loose rotor bolts on a ride will wreck your front end. Do not skip Loctite and do not skip torque.

    Transfer OEM hardware to the new caliper bracket

    The new fork bracket needs three pieces of hardware off the OEM bracket. Use a 12mm socket to pull the pole off the OEM bracket and move it to the new one. Move the small piece over next. Finally, move the brass spacer that sits against the brake pads. Lube the pole and the brass spacer so they slide freely. These are floating calipers, so that slide movement has to stay smooth while you ride.

    Bolt the new caliper bracket to the fork

    Use the two bolts provided in the kit to mount the new bracket to the fork. You will not be able to get back to these bolts easily once the wheel is on, so blue Loctite each one now and torque to spec. A loose bracket bolt on the trail is the last thing you want.

    Slide the caliper onto the bracket

    Before the wheel goes back in, slide the new caliper onto the bracket so it's ready to accept the rotor.

    Install the wheel spacers (longer on the brake side)

    The kit includes two spacers. One is about 3mm longer than the other. The longer spacer goes on the brake caliper and rotor side. Push and twist it in until you feel the O-ring click into place. Go slow, it's easy to snap the O-ring if you force it. Install the shorter OEM-size spacer on the opposite side the same way.

    Reinstall the front wheel

    Slide the rotor between the brake pads, then feed the axle through. If the fork legs aren't lined up, push the wheel down and work the stanchion up until the axle pops through. Get the axle cap started on one side but leave 3 to 4mm of gap. Go to the other side and tighten the axle down fully, then come back and finish the cap.

    Tighten the pinch bolts and recheck the axle cap

    Snug the fork pinch bolts, then torque them to your manual's spec. Double check the axle cap on the opposite side, the one you left loose earlier. If it's not tight, it will fall out on the first ride. Torque everything that got touched.

    Route the brake line and finish cable management

    Pull the brake line up so it's clear of the wheel and rotor, with no contact at full travel. For the excess loop up top, route it over the headlight and down the side. Confirm nothing rubs, nothing pinches, and the line has slack through the full steering range.

Common Mistakes:

  • Installing the rotor upside down with the laser-engraved lettering facing the hub.

    The engraved lettering side faces out, toward you, when the rotor is mounted. Flip it if it's wrong before you Loctite and torque.

  • Skipping Loctite on the rotor bolts or bracket bolts.

    Put blue Loctite on every rotor bolt and every bracket mounting bolt. These bolts back out under vibration, and a loose rotor or bracket on the trail will wreck the front end.

  • Putting the longer spacer on the wrong side of the wheel.

    The longer spacer (about 3mm longer) always goes on the brake caliper and rotor side. Double check before you slide the axle in.

  • Forcing the wheel spacer in and snapping the O-ring.

    Twist and push gently until you feel the O-ring click. If it feels jammed, back off and line it up again. A broken O-ring means the spacer won't stay put.

  • Forgetting to go back and tighten the axle cap you left loose on purpose.

    After you torque the main axle side and the pinch bolts, come back to the cap you left with 3 to 4mm of gap and tighten it down. If you skip this, it falls out on the first ride.

FAQs

Which side does the longer spacer go on?

The longer spacer (about 3mm longer than the other) goes on the brake caliper and rotor side of the wheel. The shorter OEM-size spacer goes on the opposite side.

Does this kit work on a Talaria too?

Yes. The install process is almost identical on Talaria and a few other similar small electric dirt bikes. Same steps apply.

Do I have to unplug the stock brake sensor, or can I just cut the wire?

You can snip the wire and heat shrink it, but unplugging the sensor at its connector only takes about two minutes and keeps the harness clean. Unplugging is the cleaner move.

What torque spec should I use on the rotor bolts and bracket bolts?

Check your bike's manual for the exact spec. In the install, the rotor bolts were torqued to roughly 8 Nm, but confirm that against your manual before trusting it. Loose rotor or bracket bolts will destroy your front end.

Do I really need blue Loctite?

Yes. Loctite every rotor bolt and every bracket bolt. The bracket bolts in particular are hard to reach once the wheel is on, and any of these backing out on a ride is a serious problem.

Why does the caliper need lube on the slide pole?

It's a floating caliper. The caliper body has to slide back and forth on that pole as the pads wear and engage. Without lube, it binds up and your braking suffers.
